About

Why this exists

Every PC gamer has instant replay. NVIDIA gave it away with ShadowPlay, Medal built a company on it, and Xbox Game Bar ships it in the operating system. On a Mac you have had nothing for years.

There used to be something. RetroClip did this well and stopped being updated in 2020, and the Mac apps that replaced it either record your whole screen, want a subscription, or want your clips on their servers. Meanwhile macOS quietly grew the two APIs that make a good version possible: ScreenCaptureKit, which can capture a single window and take one application's audio in isolation, and VideoToolbox, which encodes on the media engine instead of the GPU your game is using.

Hindsight is those two things pointed at one job: hold the last few minutes in memory, and write them to a file when you press a key. It does not upload anything, it has no account, and it is sold once rather than rented. Those are not features so much as the absence of things nobody asked for.

Who makes it

Hindsight is built by Dylan Buck and published by Eunoia Software LLC, a company registered in North Carolina, United States. It is a small operation: the person who answers help@hindsightclips.com is the person who wrote the capture engine.

How it is paid for

By people buying it. $19.99 once, after fourteen days free. There is no advertising, no analytics on the app that identifies anyone, no data to sell, and no investor expecting a subscription to appear later. The whole commercial relationship is one payment, and the reason the app works offline is that there is nothing on the other end of a connection for it to need.

A note on the name

There are other things called Hindsight, including a 2022 video game from Annapurna Interactive and an unrelated iOS app at hindsight.app. This is none of them. If you are looking for the Mac game clipper, you are in the right place; searching for Hindsight Clips will find it again.
