macOS is asking for Screen & System Audio Recording permission. Is that normal?
Yes, and Hindsight cannot work without it. macOS requires explicit permission before any app can see the contents of a window or a display, and Hindsight is built on Apple's own ScreenCaptureKit, so it goes through the same gate as every other capture tool. Grant it in System Settings under Privacy & Security, then Screen & System Audio Recording. Hindsight asks the first time you launch it and detects the moment you say yes, so there is no need to restart the app.
macOS keeps asking me for that permission again
That is macOS, not Hindsight. Recent versions of macOS re-confirm screen recording permission for apps periodically, and the prompt reappears even for apps you have already approved. Clicking Allow keeps the existing grant. If the prompt appears every single launch rather than occasionally, remove Hindsight from the Screen & System Audio Recording list in System Settings, then add it back, which rebuilds the entry.
I press the shortcut and nothing is saved
Three things cause this, in order of likelihood. The game already uses that key combination, so it never reaches Hindsight — record a different one in Settings under Shortcut. The screen recording permission was never granted, in which case the menu bar icon is dimmed and the buffer is empty. Or capture is paused, which the menu bar mark shows as a ring with no dot. If the icon shows a ring and a dot and the buffer readout is counting, the shortcut is the thing to change.
Where do my clips go?
Into ~/Movies/Clips by default, in a folder named after the game or app they came from, so a session sorts itself. You can point that anywhere in Settings under Storage. The notification that appears when a clip saves reveals the file in Finder when clicked. Clips are ordinary .mp4 files: nothing about them depends on Hindsight still being installed.
How do I record the game without my Discord call in the clip?
Capture the game as a window rather than capturing your whole display, then set audio to the captured application only, in Settings under Audio. A window capture on macOS can take one application's audio in isolation, so the clip gets the game and nothing else. A display capture always records the whole system mix, because that is what a display capture is. Your microphone is a separate switch and lands on its own track when enabled.
Will Hindsight cost me frames?
It is built not to. Capture goes through ScreenCaptureKit and encoding runs on the media engine, the dedicated video silicon in Apple processors, rather than competing for the GPU time your game is using. The buffer is a fixed size in memory and never grows, so a six hour session costs exactly what the first minute did. If you are on a tight budget, lower the frame rate or the resolution cap in Settings under Recording before shortening the buffer.
Nothing is written to my disk while I play?
Correct. The last N seconds live in a fixed-size ring buffer in RAM, hardware encoded as they arrive and continuously discarded as they age out. Zero bytes reach your drive until you press the shortcut. Saving is a passthrough remux of frames the encoder already produced rather than a fresh render, which is why the file appears in about a second.
What happens when the 14-day trial ends?
Hindsight stops saving new clips and opens the purchase screen instead. Nothing you already saved is touched, because your clips are ordinary files in your own folder. The replay buffer also keeps running after the trial lapses, so if you buy part way through a session, the moment still sitting in memory can still be saved.
How do I uninstall it?
Drag Hindsight to the Trash. Your clips are not stored inside the app and are not removed with it. To clear its preferences as well, remove the Hindsight entry from System Settings under Privacy & Security, then Screen & System Audio Recording.
